Reclaim Your Energy: Setting Boundaries at Work

Reclaim Your Energy: Setting Boundaries at Work

Let's talk boundaries.

A couple of years ago, I heard the saying, "companies buy your boundaries," suggesting that as you climb the career ladder, you're expected to sacrifice your personal life, rest and wellness in exchange for higher pay. I strongly disagree with this notion and it smacks of patriarchal "hustle" culture.

While success does demand hard work and dedication, it doesn't require sacrificing your well-being or personal life. Your boundaries are not for sale. And if that's how success is defined in your organization, don't walk, run for the door!

In fact, I believe women in executive roles are particularly well-served by having strong boundaries. Setting limits can enhance focus, productivity, and overall job satisfaction.

By prioritizing your well-being and setting clear boundaries, you’re not only taking care of yourself but also demonstrating leadership and setting a positive example for others. And that's what thriving cultures are built upon.

If you believe women must sacrifice personal boundaries for career success, think again. Our WomenShare podcast features inspiring guests who prove otherwise. Their stories demonstrate that thriving careers and healthy boundaries coexist.

Boundary Setting in Action

The first step is to give yourself permission to prioritize your needs. Let go of the people-pleasing mentality and the relentless pursuit of proving your worth. Remember, you deserve to set limits. It's okay to say no, and it's okay to protect your time and energy.

Next, identify your non-negotiables. What are those recurring situations that leave you feeling resentful or overwhelmed? Perhaps it’s constant after-hours emails, back-to-back meetings, or the expectation to be available 24/7. Pinpoint these boundary violations and commit to establishing norms that will work for you.

Once you've identified your boundaries, communicate them clearly and confidently. Let your colleagues know that you value your time and are making adjustments to improve your productivity. Be specific about your expectations and the reasons behind your boundaries. Remember, you're not apologizing for setting limits; you're asserting your professionalism and setting a positive example for others.

To reinforce your boundary-setting journey, consider these additional steps:

  • Practice self-care: Prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. A strong foundation supports your ability to uphold boundaries.
  • Expect pushback: When you first set boundaries, be prepared for resistance or misunderstandings. Stay firm and calmly reiterate your needs.
  • Be flexible: While your boundaries are crucial, be open to adjustments as circumstances change. Always communicate any modifications to your colleagues.
  • Celebrate successes: Recognize your achievements in setting and maintaining boundaries. Reward yourself to stay motivated.

We’ve all been there - juggling a demanding career while also managing household responsibilities, personal relationships, serving our communities...you name it! It's a balancing act that often leaves us feeling stretched thin.

While women are typically incredible at multitasking, it's essential to remember that we're not superhuman. Setting boundaries at work is not just about protecting your time; it's about prioritizing your well-being and bolstering performance.

Remember, your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Pacing yourself and setting boundaries will help you sustain your success in the long run.
